Work in progress

The first 7 photographs show some more recent images of the gardens featured on the Channel 4 Landscape Man series. They were taken 9 months after filming finished so show how the planting has established.

Most of the remaining images are dedicated to a very small London garden currently being built including plan studies as the design developed. This is a very uncompromising garden. The client has extended the rear of the house with a very slick open plan modern living space. It is completely glazed onto the garden with sliding panels. The view from the living room is quite simply 100% garden. His personal landscape. The garden has become split level and the retention of the higher level is achieved by a series of overlapping (but independent) corten steel sheets. Planting will roll down between them. Some of the sheets have been ripped open to reveal stone behind them. This is the walling stone used in the old (demolished) garden and all the paving in the new garden was also recycled from the old one. A central stream of grass, bulbs and meadow planting will run from the upper level through the garden and up to the sliding windows. Knocking on the glass as it were. The garden vocabulary creates a tension between inside and outside spaces. The garden has no intention of bowing to the minimalist interior. It will be expected to perform every day of the year.
